2011 Area-Wide Management Programs
The goal of the following programs is to suppress GWSS populations in agricultural areas. Below are the area-wide updates for 2011 by region.

Fresno County
Currently there are 2,468 area-wide traps in the agriculture setting, with a total of 52 GWSS trapped to date in 2011.
2010 area-wide citrus treatments totaled 275 acres, and in 2011 they totaled 457 acres.

Kern County
The number of GWSS trapped in Northern Kern County, in the Highway 65 area, remains relatively low. GWSS populations are higher near organic citrus. To date, 686 acres of citrus have been authorized for treatment in 2011.
A hot spot in the Western Zone involving organic citrus acreage was treated this season.
The General Beale Project has had significant activity again this year in windbreak trees (eucalyptus) and surrounding citrus. To date, all windbreaks have been treated with imidacloprid and received at least one foliar treatment. Continued trapping data show a persistent GWSS population. To date, the majority of General Beale citrus acreage and windbreak trees have been treated with both a foliar knockdown and systemic treatment.
Approximately 16,600 acres of citrus in Southern Kern County were authorized for treatment in 2011.
In 2011, a total of 35,433 GWSS have been trapped. The majority of these were trapped in either the General Beale area or the Northern Zone area (E/SE of urban Bakersfield).

Tulare County
Following foliar treatments on 38,769 acres of citrus in the fall of 2003 and imidacloprid treatments on 17,758 acres in 2004, GWSS populations in Tulare County dropped significantly. Treatments in subsequent years have focused on hot spot areas only and have not included the very large acreages treated in 2003/04. In 2011, the program opted to recommend early season imidacloprid treatments as well as a more comprehensive fall foliar treatment in hopes of further suppressing GWSS populations in a more area-wide approach.
Trap finds in 2011 to date totaled 2,568 GWSS. This was a slight increase over 2010 totals which were 1,473 GWSS.
Area-wide citrus treatments authorized in 2011 totaled 11,713 acres.

Madera County
GWSS was first detected in urban areas of this county in 2010. Following trap deployment in 2011 in commercial citrus acreage that was not previously trapped at area-wide trapping levels (1/4-mile grid), detections were made in commercial citrus and grapes. Madera County has 186 traps in agricultural areas and 239 traps in the urban setting.
To date, 21 GWSS have been found in 186 area-wide traps.
In 2011, a total of 489 acres of citrus were treated.

Coachella Valley
The Coachella Valley Area-Wide GWSS Program began in 2003 and includes approximately 12,000 acres of citrus and 10,645 acres of table grapes.
The Coachella program had 885 traps deployed in 2011, with a year-to-date trapping total of 96 GWSS.
In 2011, a total of 1,694 acres of citrus were treated using imidacloprid on conventionally-grown citrus and PyGanic on organically-grown citrus.

Temecula Valley
The program conducted in Temecula over the years has proven successful at keeping vector populations suppressed in the area, demonstrating that area-wide treatment of citrus coupled with ongoing management of GWSS within vineyards can be efficacious at managing this pest problem.
The Temecula program had 491 traps deployed, with a year-to-date trapping total of 980 GWSS.
In 2011, a total of 762 acres of citrus were treated using imidacloprid on conventionally-grown citrus and PyGanic on organically-grown citrus.
